+ inspired by: The Papered Nest

.
.
Good morning dear friends! So happy to see you back here again. Hope you're having a good day!

This morning I was searching for some craft supplies on Etsy, and stumbled across party styling kits by The Papered Nest which got me super excited and inspired (initial task obviously forgotten)! Check them out, you'd probably gush over them too!

The Papered Nest is the creation of two stay-home moms, Liz and Melissa, based in San Diego. Derived from the need for a creative outlet and through experiences of organising parties, they have designed a collection of very stylish and retro-inspired party products which will act as a base for any party themes.

I am loving all of them, particularly the adorable mini cupcake stands in a spectrum of drool-worthy colours (almost more delicious than the cupcakes themselves!), and those beautiful and creative party styling kits which will surely inspire the most amazing parties!

On a side note, I am also admiring the photography and styling of the products, which I think were done superbly; each set is so tasteful and lovingly put together, making the products even more appealing! Now... I have to go plot an event just so I can order some of these amazing stuffs!

Have a fun and creative day, everyone, and thank you for stopping by!

+ inspired by: Marjon Hoogervorst Photography

.
.
Happy Monday, dear friends! I hope you had a restful weekend and am looking forward to a fresh and inspiring new week!

This morning, I'm enjoying the lovely images by Dutch photographer Marjon Hoogervorst. I find Marjon's style honest and natural, capturing light-filled interiors from an instinctive perspective.

"The places where people live tell a lot about them... That's what inspires me - that's what I like to photograph most."

Marjon works with publications such as Elle Decoration, Anthology Magazine, Est Magazine, Vt Wonen and many more, and she's also been commissioned by brands and designers like ANOUKB, Marriot Hotels, ENZO Architecten and others.

Her passion for spaces and photography is strongly reflected through her unique point of views and 'moments' captured. Her images are a pleasure to look at; the perfect way to start off a Monday morning too!

+ loving: Ylva Skarp's Designs

.
.
I stumbled onto Ylva Skarp's work this morning, and found them inspiring and surprisingly calming, just what I needed today...

Swedish designer Ylva loves letters and calligraphies, which she used to turn into patterns and incorporates them into her own range of prints and home wares. Her style is a beautiful mix of modern ideas and traditional Swedish craftsmanship.

I find her intuitive selection of natural textures and materials in earthy, peaceful tones complements the concept perfectly. The quotes are quirky and honest, and I'm also love the Poetry Tree, and the 'Creativity' print - so beautiful and meaningful!

I'm Having A Chalkboard Moment

.
.
Good morning dear friends, hope you're all having a fantastic mid week! How do you usually start your day? This morning, however reluctant, I went through a 30mins yoga routine, and then made myself soft boiled eggs over toasted Turkish bread - yumms! Now I'm at my desk, a cup of traditional 'old town' Malaysian white coffee by my side, and I'm all geared up for the day!

During my recent trip back home, I had a catch up with Cousin J and her partner over chillers and cupcakes one afternoon, and we were talking about their new house which will be ready later this year. They were really excited and spoke about decorating the house in a personalised way to reflect who they are and what they like. It was very inspiring and enthralling for me too, to talk about design and styles with like-minded people who are adventurous enough to do something different instead of sticking with the generic.

One thing which came up during our conversation was the chalkboard trend, which has been the fad this past couple of years and is still going strong. It is such a fun thing to have in the house too, whether as a practical menu/noticeboard in the kitchen or common areas, or a more creative statement in other parts of the home. So I thought I'd help Cousin J out by sharing some ideas here, and hopefully you would be inspired too!

It is becoming pretty common to incorporate the chalkboard trend into the kitchen or dining area, giving the rooms a cafe-like style, which is quite quirky and fun, especially if you tend to spend a lot of time cooking and socialising in these rooms. You could paint over an entire wall with chalkboard paint and let the whole house know of the week's menu (make sure you stick to them though!), or set up a little sandwich board exactly like how they would do at the cafes, which is really cute when done in a home! Alternatively, if your drawing skills are great, you could start a mural wall and really give that personalised feel to your kitchen space!

It's not hard to find kitchen doors in chalkboard texture too, and I thought the above image, with an entire wall of kitchen cabinets functioning both as storage and a menu/recipe/inspiration/noticeboard is simply brilliant and unique! Also loving the industrial feel of the entire room!

In the image on the left, the chalkboard hangs on a rail and can be slide away to reveal a pull down projector screen. When the movies aren't playing, the chalkboard then adorns the otherwise blank wall. Also loving the entire feel and character of this urban loft, from the double height ceiling and massive windows to the antique type writer in the corner!

You might remember Mai from the blog A cup of Mai; I've previously featured her beautiful bedroom here. Mai recently transformed the closet space in her spare bedroom into a home office, and the result is absolutely stunning! You definitely can't tell this space used to be a closet, can you? Mai's painted all the surrounding walls with chalkboard paint, where she notes down lovely quotes, shopping list, and even her date night reminder (sweet)! This makeover gets a two thumbs up from me!

If you're not ready to cover an entire wall or your kitchen cabinets with chalkboard paint, try out smaller surfaces instead, like headboards, table tops, chest of drawers, or even the back of chairs! Also, check out the super cool Blackboard - chalkboard storage cabinet by Peter Jakubik - this cabinet is inspired by the idea of having endless possibilities and variations of the final product, and the user can change the appearance of the furniture which then informs the function of the product with a quick swipe of the duster and a few strokes of chalk.

Hope you enjoyed the collages of ideas and inspirations! Have a lovely day ahead!

{Update: I have a small chalkboard and a box of non-toxic chalk at home. While I've not been very hard working in updating my chalkboard, hence not much chance of chalk dust flying around the house, I've always assumed that most chalks in the shop these days are non-toxic. To be sure, I did a quick research. Most sites I came across confirmed that non-toxic chalks are available widely, and in some places you can even find non hypoallergenic and dustless chalks too. Alternatively, if it's more of a chalkboard 'look' you're after and like me, won't be updating the board so enthusiastically or frequently, customised vinyl stickers in handwriting fonts could do a more permanent job with great effect. I hope this helped!}

+ inspired by: The Fredensborg House

.
.
Last month, 'N' - a friend I made via the blog - mentioned that he was looking for Scandinavian-style inspirations for his new home. I offered to help with the research, and I hope I'm not too late! Here's one to start things off, and there should be more to come. Enjoy!

Modern Nordic style interiors emphasises on natural light, clean lines and a minimalist approach. This house has it all, and maybe a little more.

The Fredensborg House, located in north Copenhagen, is project by Norm Architects. Built on a sloping property, the house is made up of 5 small plateaus connected by steps, with architectural and design elements inspired by the labyrinthine mountain village architecture in Southern Europe, Chinese temples and the works of modernist Danish architect Jorn Utzon.

For me, the 18 meter stretch of vertical windows connecting the east and west axis of the house has got to be the major design and visual element, strategically allows natural light into the spaces at different times of the day, creating playful effects which helps shape the architecture and give each room its own individuality.

Different areas of the houses are marked by brick wall partitions and varying ceiling heights, with a wide central staircase leading to various sections. Despite that, there is a great sense of calm and harmony which connects the areas through the good use of consistent materials throughout the house, making it one continuous, light and airy space.

The kitchen is another favourite of mine. It is part of the open plan, situated in a centralised location to enable efficient work flow for preparing and serving, but partially hidden in two niches, effectively shielding any clutters from guests. So smart!

+ meet 'n greet: A. Jarrett/ Gabrielle Kai Photography

.
.
Hello dear friends, and Happy Monday! I thought we'd start the week off with some beautiful and inspiring photography; you might remember A. Jarrett of Gabrielle Kai Photography - I previously featured her Urban Vintage postcards which are currently selling at Ikea.

Since the post, I got in touch with A and asked if she would like to do an interview for Page Thirteen, so we can see more of her beautiful work and maybe get to know her a little better too, and she said yes! Yay!

A works mostly with film, which I truly admire, and the more I look at her images the more I'm loving their soft quality, her unique perspectives and eye for details and moments. I also really enjoyed her on-going photography projects, particularly "The Seemingly Mundane", a collection of images she captured daily for this year 2012. I believe it takes immense dedication to keep up with a project like this, to capture and share a piece of your day, everyday, for the entire year, however 'mundane' and simple it might sound!

Read on to learn more about A, her style, her passion, and what inspires her and her the work!

+ Tell us something about yourself/ your background...
I am a natural light and film photographer. You can usually find me with a camera in one hand, a toddler on my hip, and a little girl not too far behind. I live and work in Atlanta, Georgia.

+ How did you become interested in photography? Did you go to school for it?
I am a completely self taught photographer. I have always had a love for photography, but after the birth of my first daughter, that love became a passion. My priorities shifted, and I began to see the world in a new light. I grabbed my camera to capture my new found view of the world. In her honor, my work is named after my daughter, Gabrielle Kai Photography.

+ What inspires you and your work?
I am inspired by the simple, everyday moments that make up my life. I strive to capture the little, seemingly mundane details that others would overlook.

{Images from Gabrielle Kai Photography Portfolio}

+ Describe your work/style in 5 words.
Honest, true, natural, film, unscripted

+ What do you love most about what you do? Any special moments you would like to share from behind the view finder?
What I love most about photography is the ability to preserve a moment in time with cameras that are older than I am. My favorite moments are the looks I get from people when I am in my element. Sometimes, I wish that they could see the beauty that I do from behind my lens.

+ What type of cameras are you using? Any favourites?
I use a number of different of cameras, depending on my mood. My favorite camera is my workhorse - a Pentax K1000, a fully manual 35mm camera. I also have Polaroid 660 land camera, Polaroid Land Camera, and a Fuji Instax. I have recently made the move to medium format photography with a Hasselblad that I love. And finally, my digital shots are all taken with a Nikon D90.

+ I always think photographers who uses films have a unique perspective and character of their own, not following the 'main stream'. Do you prefer film photography over digital?
I love film. I love the grain, the mood, and the authenticity of film. I feel like each image can tell a story on its own. And mostly, I love the way light is captured on film - to me, there is no digital substitute. I have spent hours in Photoshop trying to get my digital pictures to look like film, then it hit me - I should just shoot with film.

+ There are currently a couple of projects showcasing on your blog, would you like to share more about them?
"Currently, a Visual Journal" are all pictures I captured with my iPhone 4S. "Seemingly Mundane" is a personal project for me - capturing a picture a day in 2012.

{Images from 'Currently, a Visual Journal' by A. Jarrett}

+ What is your dream project?
I would love to collaborate on creative projects with other film photographers!

+ What else do you do, or are passionate about, besides photography?
Being a mother to my girls is the most important thing for me right now - their happiness means the world to me.

I hope you've all enjoyed this little interview. And a big big thank you to A, for being so generous in sharing about yourself and your work!

Have an inspiring day!
